Croatia is a coastal country located in the south-eastern region of Europe, and with its northern part it is also located in Central Europe. It borders Slovenia to the west and north, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the east and south, Hungary to the north, Serbia to the east and Montenegro to the south.
The capital of the country is Zagreb. The Republic of Croatia stretches from the eastern edges of the Alps in the northwestern part to the banks of the Danube River and the Pannonian Plain in the east, its central part is covered by the Dinaric Mountains, and the southern area ends on the Adriatic coast. Croatia is administratively divided into 20 administrative units called counties, and the city of Zagreb has a special status. The inhabitants are Croats, and ethnic communities include Serbs, Bosniaks, Italians, Albanians, Roma, Hungarians and Slovenes. It is a predominantly Catholic country.
The regions are following: Dalmatia - Dubrovnik, Dalmatia - Split, Dalmatia - Sibenik, Dalmatia - Zadar, Istria, Kvarner, Lika - Karlovac, City of Zagreb, Central Croatia and Slavonia. The largest islands are Krk and Cres. Croatia was first mentioned in written sources in Frankish and Byzantine chronicles in the 9th century. It is known for its beautiful beaches, national parks, excellent cuisine and rich cultural and historical heritage. The country is ideal for many sports activities such as cycling, golf, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, flying, rafting, sailing and nautical, diving, caving, sport fishing, hiking, skiing.
Guests can stay in many hotels, tourist resorts, campsites, family and small hotels, rooms and apartments and lighthouses. The official currency in Croatia is the kuna. Croatia is most visited in the summer months.
