Osor is a beautiful village known as a museum town. It was built next to a canal with a movable bridge, which is also the only road connection between the islands of Cres and Losinj. His former name is Apsoros. It is located in the southwestern part of Cres and has always been an extremely important settlement for islanders and sailors.
On this part of the island, the islands of Losinj and Cres were once united, but now they are separated again. Osor is a city with more than 4,000 years of history, which is surrounded by walls from different periods. It is known as an open-air museum, as the history of the city is visible at every turn. Osor was already inhabited in prehistoric times, but it experienced its economic boom only in the period of antiquity. In that period, Osor was an important transit town with a population of 5,000. Today, Osor is a tourist destination that attracts its visitors due to its cultural and natural heritage, rich past, and the unique Osor music festival, which has been held since 1976 in the summer. The largest sights of Osor are the Osor Cathedral from 1498, which is today the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, the cathedral bell tower from 1575, the ancient town square with the town museum and the bishop's palace, the Benedictine Monastery and the Church of St. Peter from the 11th century, the Gothic Church of St. Gaudentius from the 14th century and others. The Museum of Sacred Art has its premises in the bishop's palace.
