Rastoke is a suburban settlement of the city of Slunj, which administratively belongs to Karlovska County. It is a picturesque place located about 100 kilometers from the capital of Croatia, Zagreb, along the main road Karlovac - Plitvicka jezera.
This old part of the town of Slunj is known for its well-preserved mills and picturesque small waterfalls along the river Slunjcica, which flows into the river Korana. It originates in the Plitvice Lakes National Park. On Rastoke, similar natural phenomena occur as on the Plitvice Lakes, and for this reason this area is often called the Little Plitvice Lakes. Both locations are connected to each other by the Korana River. The mills located around Rastoke contributed significantly to the economic development of the town of Slunj. The name Rastoke has various meanings, but generally the term refers to branches of rivers. At Rastoke, the Slunjcica river divides into several branches, which then flow over cascades and small waterfalls into the Korana river. The first written document in which the town of Slunj is mentioned was written by the famous Baron Janez Vajkard Valvasor, who describes the walled settlement, bridge and mill in 1689. The first mention of Rastoke dates back to 1860, when Adolf Veber Tkalcevic, priest and writer, mentions it in his travel report. In addition to milling, Rastoke is also known for the traditional weaving of linen and hemp. Bread from this area is known throughout this part of Croatia. In addition, the place is known for its trout and native vines. Rastoke has a lot of potential to become a continental tourist center due to its traditional architecture, gastronomic delights, special local cultural customs and favorable geographical location.
Guests can spend the night in traditional houses standing directly above the falls. The region offers many recreational opportunities such as swimming, canoeing, rafting, fishing, mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. There is also a public bathing area on the Korana river near Rastoke.
