Umag - Umag Town Museum
Umag, picturesque small town and port on the north-western coast of Istria, presents Croatia's entrance to Europe. It also has a status of the Istrian sports centre, since as the host of the ATP tournament for many years now, it attracts a lot of top world tennis players.
Umag is a town of wide cultural horizons which has a number of galleries and has a rich artistic offering comprising festivals, concerts, exhibitions, theatrical performances and a diversity of other cultural events. The old town of Umag is located on a peninsula and features metropolitan structure of the Middle Ages. Its centre of narrow streets has traces of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, including four medieval churches built from 13th to 16th century. Situated at the end of the old-town peninsula, the medieval tower, known as the Bishop's Tower, is home to the City Museum. Dating back to the early 14th century, the tower was used as a fortress for defending the settlement from the sea and is thought to be the oldest building standing in Umag today. It was not until 1976 that the Museum of Umag opened, with the occasional art exhibit and only a small collection of stone monuments. Twenty years later, the special archaeological collection Cigui-Fachin was bought, leaded by archaeologist Narcisa Bolsec Ferri. It was under her leadership, and the new motto Light in darkness, that the museum finally got momentum, undertaking more exhibitions and research activities. The new collection, in union with the lapida collection, together formed the independent institution, Museum of Umag. Today, museum frequently performs historical-artistic and archaeological research, organizes lectures, art exhibits and workshops as well as hots numerous archaeological and historical exhibits.
The first floor of the Umag Museum is committed to archeological or historical and fine-arts exhibitions while the permanent museum can be found on the second floor including the coat of arms of the Venetian leaders and famous Umag families as well as the coat of arms.
