The island of Krk is the largest Adriatic island. It is separated from the coast only by a narrow channel, and it is connected to the mainland by the Krk Bridge. The north coast is windy and rocky, while the south-west and west are green with many beaches and coves. Krk has been inhabited since the Neolithic.
In the Middle Ages it was under the rule of the Frankopans, and in 1480 it was conquered by the Venetians. The most famous tourist centers on the island are Krk, Malinska, Punat, Baska, Njivice, Vrbnik and Omisalj. In the hinterland of Vrbnik lies the fertile Vrbnik field, where vegetables and vines grow. The town of Krk has a picturesque old town surrounded by old town walls. It was built between the 12th and 14th centuries. Stepinac Street is home to a mighty castle from the 12th century, which rises right next to the coast. Behind it stands the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, and next to it the Romanesque Basilica of St. Quirina from the 10th to 11th century. Originally, there was an early Christian basilica from the 5th century on the site of the cathedral. In the 12th century, the present Romanesque cathedral was built on the remains of the Roman baths. The baptistery was located on the north side of the building.
Iside there are 14 columns, one of them has very rare symbols from the Eucharist, namely two birds eating fish on each side. The biggest features of the church are the richly decorated altar from 1477 and the wood-carved pulpit from the 17th century. The church bell also dates from the same period.
