Lovran is a small town situated on the eastern rough slopes of the Ucka mountain. This is a place with a rich past and with a long tourism tradition. The Lovran was named after the laurel tree that grows in the town and its surroundings.
Lovran has preserved its beautiful historic core, built according the medievan urban conception. The tourism developed on the verge of the 20th century because of the dense Mediterranean vegetation, mild climate and favorable geographical position. Town is well-know for its numerous historical sites which testify to its turbulent and long past. The parish church and the church steeple were built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style. From this epoch remains only the statue of »Ecce Homo« immured above the portal. In the 14th century the church has been rebuilt and renewed in the Gothic style. Only the remarkable traces are in Presbyterium. Further renewal has remarks of Baroque. Last time the church has been renewed in 18th century, when the steeple has been connected with the church forming a new chapel. The altars are in Baroque with some Renaissance distinctions. Baptismal font is work of the home artist and is of great value. The very interesting frescos in Presbyterium were discovered in 1952. They belong to the 16th century. On the painting have the home priests engraved their names and remarks in the old Croatian language and Glagolitic letters.
The frescoes illustrate scenes from the life of Christ, the legend of Saint George, angels playing musical instruments, the Sun and the Moon and the sanctuary arch shows a painting of the Last Judgement.
