Mali Losinj is the most developed tourist center on the island of Losinj. It is located in the southern part of the Losinj Bay. Because of its location, it has developed into an important maritime and trade center, and today it is one of the main tourist centers in the Adriatic area.
Mali Losinj is known for its lush subtropical vegetation, such as roses, pines, agaves, oleanders, palm trees and more. The first island settlements date back to the Neolithic period. After the Roman and Byzantine periods, twelve Croatian families immigrated to the island in the 12th century. Some of them settled in the eastern area of the bay, where Malo Selo developed with a cemetery and a church - the current Mali Losinj. The first immigrants were engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry, but then they moved on to fishing, seafaring and shipbuilding. Mali Losinj experienced its greatest prosperity at the end of the 19th century, when it became a well-known maritime resort due to the sea and seafaring. Around 1880, sailing ships were replaced by steamships and the period of tourism boom began. Visitors found their paradise among the Cikata pines. The Republic of Croatia Square is located in the center of Mali Losinj, next to the city's harbor. The largest attraction on the square is the fountain, which was erected at the opening of the local water supply.
In a stone shell, fresh water flows from two dolphins, which is brought to the island of Losinj from Lake Vrana. The fountain was made by the sculptor Vinko Matkovic from Reka. The aqueduct was completed on April 24, 1960, and this project ended the island's difficult chapter without running water.
