Opatija is a traditional seaside resort in the Kvarner Bay, known for its Mediterranean climate and historic buildings reminiscent of the Austrian Riviera. The place is a popular summer and winter hub. Villa Angiolina is a building that marked the beginning of the tourist story in the history of Opatija.
It was built in 1844 and is a reconstruction of an older building owned by Baron Haller von Hallerxtein. Opatija was a relatively large settlement with about 120 houses, located mainly on plots that were further away from the sea coast. The inhabitants were mostly engaged in fishing and sea navigation. With the arrival of entrepreneur Igini Scarpa from Rijeka and the construction of his summer residence Angiolina, named after his late wife, Opatija opened its doors to important guests and travelers. Among them, the most prominent are the Austrian Empress Mary Ann, the botanist Heinrich Noe, the Croatian Ban Josip Jelacic and others, who in their enthusiasm for the local vegetation and climate spread the fame of Opatija around the world and thus prepared the ground for the future spa. After Scarpa and his son Paolo, who in 1869 dealt with the idea of establishing a sanatorium, the villa was owned by the Moravian nobleman Chorinsky, then the Southern Railway Company, the International Wagon Society, the Spa Commission, and others. Iginio Scarpa bought the entire land for 700 florins, and in 1919 the villa with the surrounding park full of exotic plants sold for 2.5 million kroner.
In Scarpa's time, the villa was a meeting place for important people from Rijeka, then a place for summer parties on its terraces, and at the end of the Austrian period, the seat of the spa commission with an orchestral pavilion and a lively promenade. Today, the villa is the seat of the Croatian Museum of Tourism.
