Podgora is a popular seaside village located in the very heart of the Makarska Riviera. Situated south of Makarska on the Split–Dubrovnik road, it belongs to the Split-Dalmatia County. Nestled at the foot of the majestic Biokovo Mountain, it offers a unique blend of towering rocky slopes and the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.
The village is known for its long maritime tradition and its calm Mediterranean atmosphere. It is characterized by long pebble beaches, numerous small coves, and a relaxed environment that makes Podgora an ideal choice for a peaceful holiday. The area has a rich history of fishing and seafaring, reflected in one of its most notable landmarks – Seagull’s Wing monument, dedicated to sailors and the struggle for freedom during the Second World War. Above the coast rises the old part of Podgora, with traditional stone houses, narrow streets, and authentic Dalmatian architecture that preserves the charm of the past. The village is also home to the monument of Mihovil Pavlinovic, an important 19th-century Dalmatian politician and national advocate who played a significant role in shaping the region’s identity. Along the shoreline stretches the livelier part of Podgora, featuring small hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and numerous opportunities for recreation and boat excursions. Adding a special character to the village is the riva – the main seaside promenade and the social heart of Podgora. Here lies the small harbor with moorings for local fishing boats, sailboats, and tourist vessels.
The promenade is lined with cafés, restaurants, and bars overlooking the sea, with benches placed along the path for rest. Tall palm trees provide pleasant shade and enhance the Mediterranean ambiance. The riva in Podgora is a place for relaxation, socializing, and evening strolls by the sea, where the true spirit of the village is felt most vividly.
