Trogir is a coastal town in Croatia, located in central Dalmatia, approximately 25 kilometres west of Split, in close proximity to Split Airport. It lies on a small island between the mainland and the island of Ciovo. Owing to its strategic position on the Adriatic Sea and its rich history, which dates back more than two thousand years, Trogir is considered one of the most beautiful historic towns in the region.
The town, shaped by the influences of the ancient Greeks, Romans and Venetians, is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved medieval core and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its narrow stone streets, old palaces, churches and fortifications bear witness to a rich past, while the modern marina, lively restaurants, galleries and cultural events offer visitors an authentic experience of the Dalmatian way of life. Trogir is a popular tourist destination and an ideal starting point for exploring central Dalmatia, with beautiful beaches, bays and islands in the immediate vicinity. In the very heart of the town lies Ivan Paul II Square, the main town square and the centre of Trogir. It is surrounded by architectural and historical landmarks that together create one of the most beautiful urban settings on the Adriatic. The most prominent landmark is the Cathedral of St Lawrence, famous for its Romanesque-Gothic portal by Master Radovan and its tall bell tower, which offers views of the town and the surrounding islands. Opposite the cathedral stand the Small and Large Cipiko Palaces, former residences of an influential noble family, reflecting the splendour of Renaissance architecture. The square is also home to the Town Hall, which today hosts cultural events, and the Town Loggia, formerly used for public assemblies and judicial decisions. A distinctive feature of the square is the Church of St Sebastian, with its characteristic clock tower, one of the most recognisable silhouettes of Trogir. In the immediate vicinity is also the Romanesque Church of St John the Baptist.
Today, Ivan Paul II Square is not only a historically important space but also a lively meeting point for locals and visitors alike. Concerts, cultural events and summer festivals take place here, while cafes and restaurants provide opportunities for relaxation and observation of the vibrant rhythm of town life.
