The picturesque city of Zagreb is located at the cultural, geographical, political and historical crossroads of the West and the East, and it combines the Mediterranean and continental spirit into a special whole.
It is the center of the Republic of Croatia with the seat of the president, parliament and government. Zagreb, as we know it today, is part of its historical core and was created in the Middle Ages on two hills - the secular Gradec, the present Upper Town, and the ecclesiastical Kaptol. The differences between the episcopal and the free royal city were finally abolished in 1850, when both were united into the city of Zagreb. The Church of St. Catherine is located on the smaller square of the same name in Upper Town. It is one of the best-preserved examples of Baroque luxury. It was built by the Jesuits in the period between 1620 and 1632. It is a one-nave church with six side chapels and a presbytery. In the chapels there are five wooden baroque altars from the 17th century and a marble altar from 1729. The church vault and walls are decorated with luxurious stucco from 1732. In the presbytery there is a low main altar, which is located in front of a large illusionistic painting of Saint Catherine among the Alexandrian philosophers, the author of which is the Ljubljana painter Kristofor Andrija Jelovsek. Church of St. Catherine was completely rebuilt after the 1880 earthquake. The renovation project was made by the famous architect Hermann Bolle (1845-1926).
He was also credited with the restoration of the Church of St. Mark, the Zagreb Cathedral, and the Museum of Arts and Crafts. He had a great influence in planning the general appearance of the city of Zagreb.
