St. Mary's Church was originally a monastery church belonging to the Cistercian order. At the beginning of the 16th century, the order temporarily ceased to function and then it became a parish church. The sacral building is also shown on the oldest preserved illustration of Zagreb.
It was built on a plateau that descends in a terraced manner towards the former suburb of the church Kaptol. A small Gothic church with a tower on the east side was gradually expanded in the middle of the 18th century into a Romanesque building with a bell tower on the north side. The west church entrance was built at the end of the 18th century, but the smaller entrance with the baroque portal on the east side is generally more used. The marble main altar with statues of Saints Peter and Paul and angels was erected in 1768. The fresco behind it was painted by Slovenian painters, father Franc and son Kristof Jelovsek. On the four altars in the nave were the altarpieces of the Slovenian painter Anton Cebe, of which only the Adoration of the Holy Three Kings was preserved. The statues on all the altars and the relief on the pulpit are the work of the Ljubljana sculptor and architect Franjo Rottman. The pulpit is decorated with a large relief depicting the preaching of Saint John the Baptist.
The Church of St. Mary was not destroyed in the great earthquake of 1880, and therefore church services were held in it while the Zagreb Cathedral was being renovated. Today it is surrounded by modern buildings, which were built after the renovation of the Dolac area in 1925. On this occasion, the Cistercian monastery was also demolished.
