Dubrovnik is a famous tourist town in southern Dalmatia, Croatia, which lies along the Adriatic Sea. It is considered one of the most attractive destinations in the Mediterranean. It is a sea port and the center of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
The history of the city dates back to the 7th century, when it was founded by refugees from Epidaurum. It was then known as Ragusa. It was under the protection of the Byzantine Empire and later under the sovereignty of the Republic of Venice. Between the 14th and 19th centuries, Dubrovnik ruled as a free state. The city's prosperity was historically based on maritime trade. In 1979, Dubrovnik was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its outstanding medieval culture and fortified old town. The Franciscan monastery is located in the area of the main street of Stradun, opposite the Great Onorfi's Fountain. The first monastery was built in the 13th century outside the city walls in the suburb of Pila. It was demolished when war was declared against the Serbian king Uros II. Milutin. The current monastery was built in 1317, but its construction took centuries. The monastery complex includes a church, cloister and garden, a museum and an old pharmacy. Parts of the complex have been rebuilt several times. The monastery library was added in the 17th century, and in 1896 a theological preparation room was added to the monastery. The interior of the church was remodeled in the baroque style with one nave. The main altar from 1713 is the work of the sculptor Celia from Ancona. Ivan Gundulic, the famous Dubrovnik baroque playwright, poet and writer, is buried in the church. The monastery has two cross corridors with arches, a garden and a promenade. The upper arch is in the Renaissance style and the lower arch is in the Romanesque-Gothic style and is the work of Mihoja Brajkov from Bar. In the museum library, you can see valuable examples of corals and manuscripts, a relic of Saint Ursula from the 14th century, a collection of jewelry ex vuoto and paintings by unknown masters. The Franciscan pharmacy dates back to 1317. It is the oldest still operating pharmacy in Europe and the third oldest in the world. The inventory of the old pharmacy from 1317 and well-preserved pharmacy furniture from the 16th century have been preserved.
It is no longer under the management of monks, but it still produces certain creams and ointments, which are made according to recipes that are more than 600 years old. It is possible to buy cream made from rose petals in the pharmacy, and the recipe for it is still the same as in the period of the Republic of Dubrovnik.
