The city of Dubrovnik is a world-famous tourist destination located in southern Dalmatia, Croatia. It is one of the four largest cities in Dalmatia. In 1979, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is the administrative center of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
Dubrovnik is known for its picturesque old town surrounded by massive stone walls completed in the 16th century. Dubrovnik's city walls are one of the most visited attractions in Dubrovnik. The Franciscan monastery is located near the Great Onofrio's Fountain in the area of Stradun or Placa, which is the main street in Dubrovnik. A pedestrian street paved with limestone leads for about 300 meters through the historic city center. There are also shops, restaurants and bars in this area. The earliest monastery was built in the 13th century outside the walls of Dubrovnik. The current Franciscan monastery inside the walls and near the Pila gate was built in 1317, but its construction took centuries. Parts of the monastery complex were rebuilt several times. The complex includes a monastery church, a cloister and a garden, a museum and an old pharmacy. The monastery was built in 1360 in the late Romanesque style and is the work of master Mihoja Brajkov from Bar. It covers two cross aisles. The lower corridor was built in the Romanesque-Gothic style with arches, columns, massive pilasters and a promenade.
The upper corridor was built in the Renaissance style with arches and semicircular arches. The capitals depict various plant, animal, geometric and human figures. The monastery library was built in the 17th century. It contains more than 20,000 books, including valuable old manuscripts, incunabula, books with old church chorales and the inventory of the old pharmacy of the Friars Minor from 1317. The church was destroyed in an earthquake in 1667. Among the many losses was a statue of Pietro di Martino da Milan. Only the ornate portal overlooking the main street of Dubrovnik has been preserved. In 1498, it was carved in the Gothic style in the workshop of the brothers Petar and Leonard Petrović. The pieta in the central lunette is surrounded by figures of St. John the Baptist and St. Jerome holding a model of the pre-earthquake church. The pieta is almost life-size, decorated with luxurious leaves. The interior of the church was remodeled in the baroque style with one nave. The main altar is the work of the sculptor Celia from Ancona from 1713. It represents the statue of the resurrected Christ between four wrapped marble columns.
The Venetian Giuseppe Sardi sculpted five side altars between 1684 and 1696. In 1888, the painter Celestin Medović painted the decorations on the altar of Saint Francis. The poet Ivan Gundulić is buried in the monastery church. The monastery pharmacy from 1317 is the third oldest pharmacy in the world and the oldest still operating pharmacy in Europe.
