Dubrovnik is a picturesque city in southern Dalmatia by the Adriatic Sea. It is a historical and port city and the administrative center of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It is one of the four largest cities in Dalmatia.
Dubrovnik is one of the most popular tourist resorts, attracting many domestic and foreign visitors throughout the year. It is the most southern Croatian city with a distinct Mediterranean climate. The city is known for its characteristic old town, which is surrounded by massive stone walls that were completed in the 16th century. In 1979, Dubrovnik was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Blaise is the patron saint of the city. The statue is located at the entrance to the city, on the facades of buildings, churches, palaces, fortresses, in the harbor and on the city walls. It is also a symbol of Dubrovnik's statehood. Placa (Stradun) is Dubrovnik's main street in the old city center. It is Dubrovnik's most popular meeting place and promenade. It is the main commercial center of the old part of Dubrovnik and the scene of all major ceremonies and processions. The name Placa comes from the Latin and Greek term platea and means street. Stradun originates from the Venetians and means a derogatory term for a large street. Stradun is the most beautiful and widest city street, which divides the town center into the southern and northern parts. It is the shortest connection between the eastern city gate (Vlata s Ploc) and the western gate (Vrata s Pil). Both ends are also marked by 15th-century fountains and bell towers. The Little Onofrio's Fountain stands at the eastern end and the Big Onofrio's Fountain at the western part. The bell tower attached to the Franciscan monastery stands on the west and the Dubrovnik bell tower on the east end. Placa was built at the end of the 9th century. At that time, they filled up the shallow sea strait that separated the islet of Lava and the settlement on it from the mainland and another settlement. In the 13th century, the Placa became the city's main gateway. Placa got its present appearance after the great earthquake of 1667, when the city was thoroughly rebuilt after the destruction caused by the earthquake and fires. Many historical buildings and monuments in Dubrovnik stand along the Stradun, making it a popular promenade. On the western part of the Place are the Former Convent of St Claire and the Franciscan monastery. The Church of the Holy Redeemer stands next to the walls, and the center of the field is distinguished by the Big Onofrio's Fountain.
On the eastern side, the square passes into the central square, which represents the center of public city life, Luza square. Every year, a procession takes place through Stradun on the feast of Saint Blaise, who is the protector of Dubrovnik. Concerts are also held here and it is used for New Year's Eve parties.
