The Dubrovnik Clock Tower and the Bell Ringer’s Loggia are iconic landmarks of the city’s historic core, located on Luza Square, near Stradun, the city’s main promenade. This square has been the heart of Dubrovnik’s social, political, and cultural life for centuries.
Surrounded by significant landmarks such as the Sponza Palace and the Church of St. Blaise, the Clock Tower and the Bell Ringer’s Loggia stand out as key elements of the cityscape, attracting visitors from around the world. The Clock Tower, rising 31 meters high, was built in 1444 and played a crucial role in the daily organization of life in the Republic of Ragusa. Its clock and the famous bell ringers—mechanical wooden figures known as zelenci—were responsible for marking the time, ensuring the smooth functioning of the city’s routines. The bell ringers, affectionately named Maro and Baro, strike a bronze bell with their hammers, symbolizing discipline and punctuality. Originally made of bronze, the bell ringers have been replaced with replicas that preserve the spirit of this long-standing tradition. Over the centuries, the Clock Tower underwent several renovations due to damage caused by the great earthquake of 1667 and the passage of time. The most significant restoration was carried out in the 20th century, carefully adhering to the original designs to preserve its historical and architectural value. Today, the Clock Tower continues to function, combining historical heritage with modern mechanisms.Adjacent to the tower stands the Bell Ringer’s Loggia, a stunning example of Renaissance architecture built in the second half of the 15th century. Its elegant open design, with stone columns and arches, served as a space where the bell ringers performed their duties. It was also a venue for important public events, announcements, and gatherings. The loggia was closely tied to the everyday life of the city, providing shelter and a meeting place for citizens. Beyond their practical purposes, the Clock Tower and Loggia held symbolic significance, representing the strength and organization of the Republic of Ragusa, renowned for its effective governance and respect for order. Today, they are part of the unique city complex designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The Dubrovnik Clock Tower and the Bell Ringer’s Loggia are still vibrant venues for cultural events, festivals, and traditional ceremonies, most notably those of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
The tower continues to chime the hours, while the bell ringers remind visitors of the city’s rich past with every strike of the bell. These architectural jewels remain a lively symbol of Dubrovnik, seamlessly connecting its historical legacy with contemporary urban life.
