Orlando's Column is one of the most recognizable symbols of Dubrovnik, located in the main square of the old town, known as Stradun. Stradun is the city's main street, which connects the northern and southern city gates.
It is a wide and picturesque promenade lined with architectural gems, shops, and cafés, and serves as the most important space for strolling and social life in the city. Orlando's Column, erected on Placa in the center of Stradun, was built in 1419 in honor of Orlando, a knight who, according to legend, helped the people of Dubrovnik defeat the Saracens in their fight for the city's freedom. The column stands about 10 meters tall and features a statue of the knight at the top, holding a sword in his left hand while pointing forward with his right. The sculpture is the work of an unknown artist but is often associated with Gothic art. Historically, Orlando's Column also served as a public noticeboard for important announcements and documents read out to the public. Additionally, the column was a symbol of Dubrovnik's freedom and political independence. Today, the column is a popular point for tourists, who admire both its historical value and the unique view of Stradun, which is a popular venue for various cultural and social events, such as concerts, festivals, and parades.
The entire area around Orlando's Column and Stradun is vibrant, filled with historic buildings, churches, and palaces, all telling the story of Dubrovnik's rich past as an important maritime and trading center.
