The town of Novigrad is a popular tourist center in Istria, which administratively falls under the County of Istria. It lies on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula, south of Umag. It is closed from the northern part by the bay of the River Mirna, which flows into the Adriatic Sea here.
Novigrad has a varied historical past, which is reflected in many cultural attractions. Among the largest are the church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximus, the bell tower, the former city walls, the round tower and more. The Lapidarium Museum is located in the immediate vicinity of the parish church of St. Pelagius and St. Maximus. Lapidarium is one of the most important collections of its kind in Croatia. The collection mainly includes elements of church architecture from the parish church. In the old center, the rich heritage of the city is complemented by an interesting and diverse layout of the Gallerion, which is a naval collection of the former Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Navy. The bell tower is the most recognizable object of local heritage. The free-standing bell tower of the parish church was built in 1883, modeled on the bell tower of St. Mark in Venice, Italy. At the top is a statue of St. Pelagius, the patron saint of the city of Novigrad. It was erected in 1913 and is made of wood and bronze.
The bell tower, together with certain parts of the once mighty city walls, was renovated in 2004 and 2005. Once upon a time, all the festivities, celebrations and gatherings took place around the bell tower in the main square, which can also be seen in many old photographs.
