The city of Zagreb is divided into Lower Town, Upper Town and the wider center. In the area of the Lower Town is located Ilica, Petar Preradovic Square, King Tomislav Square, Nikola Subic Zrinski Square, Marshal Tito Square, Masarykova Square and Jurisic Street.
Ante Starcevic Square extends near King Tomislav Square, named after King Tomislav, who was the first Croatian King. The brave warlord defended mainland Croatia from the conquest of the Hungarians and for the first time united the Croatian provinces into one country. From the square there is a magnificent view of the Hotel Esplanade, which was built in 1925. The original purpose of the hotel was to provide top accommodation to the passengers of the Orient Express, a luxury train line that served as an intermediate route between Paris and Istanbul. Many important guests were staying there and interesting social events were going on. Particularly public attention came from hosting the provocative black dancer Josephine Baker in 1929, when local ladies expressed their disapproval. The Esplanade Hotel hosted the first Miss event in 1926. The choosen Miss was crowned for Miss Europe next year. Zagreb has combination of the atmosphere of a small town and the luxury of a Central European metropolis put on a map of modern Europen cities.
Near Starcevic Square are also located the main railway station and the Art Pavilion. The historic building of Zagreb's main railway station is the work of Hungarian expert Ferenc Pfaff. It was built in 1892.
