Veli Losinj is a picturesque small town located in a narrow bay on the southeastern part of the island of Losinj. The special features of the place are numerous villas with beautiful gardens and high-rise buildings along the coast.
In 2008, Veli Losinj won the Blue Flower award for the most organized city in the Adriatic area. Veli Losinj developed from a rural place into a seaside shipping town in the 17th century. Today, the locals make a living mostly from tourism. The most recognizable point is the city harbor, which is one of the most beautiful in all of Istria. Above the city climbs the hill of Saint Ivan, which offers a beautiful view. The biggest sights of the town are the church of St. Anthony the Hermit, Church of Our Lady of the Angels, Church of St. Nicholas, church of St. John the Baptist, a fortress from the 15th century, which houses a museum-gallery space and more. Parish Church of Saint Anthony the Hermit was built between 1767 and 1774 according to the plans of the Venetian architect Berengo. The original church was built here in 1480. The exterior of the church is classically calm, while the interior is luxurious in the late Baroque style. The organ is the work of the famous Venetian master Gaetano Callido from 1782, and the stucco paintings depicting musical instruments are the work of the Swiss master Clement Somazzi. The relief from the 18th century on the main altar depicting the Supper at Emmaus is the work of the master from Piran - Gaspar Albertini. At the beginning of the 19th century, the church was for a short period a cathedral, where the last bishop of Osor, Rakamaric, served. Church of St. Anthony the Hermit was always gifted with luxurious church inventory by Velolosin seafarers. Among them, the captain Gaspar Kraljeta stood out the most, who in his time in Venice was known as an extraordinary art lover and a great collector. The Church of St. Anthony is a monument to the glory of the sailors from Veli Losinj and their final resting place.
Over the centuries, members of the Leva, Raguzin, Petrina, Busanic and other families were buried around the church and in it. Many of them found their final resting place in the depths of the sea.
