Veli Losinj is a beautiful town characterized by colorful building facades. The place is located in a narrow bay on the southeastern part of the island of Losinj. Veli Losinj is best known for its harbor, which is one of the most beautiful in all of Istria.
Veli Losinj transformed from a sleepy rural town into a lively seaside shipping town in the 17th century. Today, the inhabitants of the city mostly make a living from tourism. In 2008, the city won the Blue Flower award for the most organized city in the Adriatic region. The most recognizable points are the harbor and the baroque parish church of St. Anton the Hermit. It was built with a lot of help from local sailors in the period from 1767 to 1774. There is a promenade along the harbor where there are many restaurants and cafes. On the hill of Saint Ivan is a wonderful viewpoint where the church of St. John, and next to it is also the Way of the Cross with chapels. Cape Leva is named after the famous seafaring Leva family, which came from Spain (De Leyva). The noble title was given to the Losinj family when they participated in the Venetian conflicts with the Turks. In the 17th century, they are mentioned as commanders of the fort on the small island of Saint Petar at Ilovik, and from the 18th century onwards generations of captains began to line up.
Petar Jakov (Pietro Giacomo) Leva is known as the first captain from the eastern Adriatic region who sailed around Cape Horn in 1834. He sailed from Trieste to Valparais in about 120 days and concluded trade deals with Chile there. He had ten children with two wives, five of whom became captains.
