Veli Losinj is located in a narrow bay on the southeastern part of the island of Losinj. It is the second largest settlement on the island, characterized by many luxurious villas with beautiful gardens and high-rise buildings along the coast, which represent the specialty of Veli Losinj.
The rural settlement developed into a lively seaside resort in the 17th century. Today, the locals make a living mostly from tourism. Veli Losinj impresses the most with one of the most beautiful harbors in all of Istria. Tables in restaurants and bars reach almost to the sea, where fishing boats and sailboats are moored. The oldest sacral building is the parish church of Saint Anthony the Hermit, whose greatest wealth is the organ of the famous Venetian maker Gaetano Callido, sacred works of art and numerous relics. The tower is located in the center of Veli Losinj. The free-standing circular tower was built in the 15th century, during the first decades of Venetian rule over the eastern coast of the Adriatic. A fairly low tower (17 meters) with small openings and thick walls resisted enemy cannon fire from ships over the centuries and thus protected the population. At the beginning of the 19th century, the once dominant building in the city harbor lost its military significance and gained a symbolic meaning, it also appeared on the coat of arms of the newly established municipality of Veli Losinj.
The tower was thoroughly renovated and in 2001 the Kula gallery and museum, which is part of the Losinj Museum, was opened in it. Permanent exhibitions show the varied history of Velolosinj's seafaring and tourism.
