Baska is a popular tourist resort and port located in the southeastern part of the island of Krk, in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. The town developed in the valley of Suha Ricina at the end of the Baska Valley along a wide sea bay.
The municipality of Baska borders the municipality of Vrbnik to the north and the municipality of Punat to the west. The local population has traditionally been engaged in seafaring, fishing, viticulture, and sheep breeding. The main economic activity is tourism, which began to develop at the beginning of the 20th century. The first hotel with a bathing area was built in 1906. The most important cultural and historical landmarks include the Baroque three-nave parish church of the Holy Trinity with a bell tower, filled with artworks by painters from the 17th century, the Church of Saint John the Baptist, the Church of Saint Ivan, the Church of Saint Lucy, the Chapel of Saint Mark, the Local Museum, and the Ethno House. Antique mosaics were discovered in the chapel. Baska is known for the Baska Tablet, which represents a national cultural monument of the Croatian people. The tablet is a Glagolitic inscription, a carved document in thirteen lines that describes a donation charter by the Croatian King Zvonimir to the Church of Saint Lucy in nearby Jurandvor.
It is the oldest longer inscription in the Old Croatian language, dating to around the year 1100. The main town beach is the almost two-kilometer-long pebble Vela Plaza, one of the most recognizable and famous beaches on the Adriatic. Along it runs a promenade surrounded by numerous restaurants, cafes, pastry shops, hotels, and private accommodations. Baska offers many opportunities for activities such as hiking, climbing, diving, and cycling. For lovers of hiking and walking, several marked tourist trails have been arranged in Baska, totaling around 80 kilometers. The letters of the old Croatian Glagolitic script have been preserved in the settlement in 35 stone sculptures placed along a pedestrian path called the Baska Glagolitic Trail. Along this path there is a landscaped viewpoint above the green Baska Valley, offering a beautiful panoramic view of Baska, the surrounding slopes, the Adriatic Sea, and the nearby islands of Prvic and Zecje. This viewpoint is one of the stops on the Glagolitic Trail, where the first letter of the Glagolitic alphabet - the letter A - is presented.
Next to the viewpoint there is a small parking area that allows easy access and a short stop for visitors. The spot is popular among hikers, excursionists, and anyone who wishes to enjoy the view and learn about part of the rich cultural heritage of this area.
