Zadar is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, blending rich history, cultural heritage, and modern urban life. Its roots stretch back more than three thousand years, reflected in numerous historical landmarks, architectural masterpieces, and archaeological remains.
The city is renowned for its stunning defensive walls, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for its unique attractions that set it apart from other Dalmatian cities. One of its most iconic landmarks is the Roman Forum, built in the 1st century BC, which remains the heart of the old town. Adjacent to it stands the Church of St. Donatus from the 9th century, one of the finest pre-Romanesque buildings in Croatia and a symbol of the city. Nearby is the magnificent Cathedral of St. Anastasia, the largest church in Dalmatia, admired for its Romanesque architecture and towering bell tower, offering breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings.Along the waterfront, two modern art installations have become Zadar’s signature attractions – the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun. The Sea Organ is a unique architectural and musical feature where sea waves create harmonic sounds through a special system of pipes embedded in stone steps. The Greeting to the Sun is a circular light installation composed of solar panels that generate a colorful nighttime light show, synchronized with the rhythm of the waves and the movement of people.
Beyond its cultural landmarks, Zadar also boasts remarkable natural beauty. Just a few kilometers from the city lies Vransko Lake Nature Park, the largest lake in Croatia, a popular destination for nature lovers, bird watchers, and cyclists. Additionally, Zadar serves as a perfect gateway to the Kornati National Park, a breathtaking archipelago with crystal-clear waters, and Paklenica National Park, famous for its dramatic canyons and hiking trails. Besides its historical and natural significance, Zadar is also an important sports hub, highlighted by the Kresimir Cosic Hall, one of the most modern sports venues in Croatia. Located within the Visnjik Sports Center, the hall is named after the legendary Croatian basketball player Kresimir Cosic, one of the greatest European basketball players of all time. Opened in 2008, it is one of the largest arenas in Croatia, with a capacity of approximately 9,000 spectators. Designed as a state-of-the-art sports facility, it features a main court, several smaller halls, fitness centers, locker rooms, conference rooms, and VIP lounges. Equipped with the latest lighting, sound, and multimedia technology, it provides a top-tier experience for both athletes and visitors.
In addition to being the home arena of the Zadar basketball team, it hosts numerous national and international sports events, including basketball, handball, and volleyball competitions. It is also a popular venue for concerts, fairs, and other cultural and entertainment events. Due to its multifunctional design, capacity, and advanced infrastructure, it is regarded as one of the most important sports and cultural venues in Croatia and a key part of Zadar’s sporting heritage.
