Medulin - Malin Windmill

Medulin developed in southern Istria between cultivated hinterland and a sheltered sea bay. Fishing, navigation, harbour trade and grain milling shaped the local economy over time and left traces in the appearance of its waterfront.

Malin na vitar stands on a waterside square beside the Medulin waterfront, immediately next to the harbour area. With its stone tower and blue-and-white sails, the windmill is one of the most recognisable symbols of Medulin and a prominent feature on the otherwise low shoreline.

The present Malin is a faithful reconstruction of an earlier coastal mill. Two windmills belonging to the Pošić brothers worked on this part of the coast in the nineteenth century, using winds across the open bay and benefiting from the nearby port. The reconstruction recalls a period when grain milling formed part of the local economy.

The structure consists of a round stone tower, a rotating cap and eight sail panels on wooden arms. A stone channel and elements associated with the mill are visible around its base. The photographs show it from several angles, moving from sail details to a broad view across the paved square.

Views from the windmill extend over Medulin Harbour, its moored boats and the settlement across the water. Its level waterfront setting makes it easy to include in a walk, while access to the interior or demonstrations of the mechanism depend on current arrangements and are not established by the gallery.
