Makarska is a small town and port in the Split-Dalmatia County. It is a famous tourist place at the foot of the Biokovo Mountains along the main road Split-Dubrovnik. The city stretches along the bay, which is closed by the peninsula of St. Peter and Cape Osejeva.
Makarska has a varied historical past. It was built on the site of the ancient settlement of Muccuruma, which was demolished by the Avars in the middle of the 6th century. It is considered one of the oldest towns in the eastern Croatian Adriatic. The biggest cultural and historical sights are the Franciscan monastery, the parish church of St. Mark, the baroque church of St. Philip, the remains of the church of St. Peter from the 15th century, the monument to Napoleon's Marshal Marmont, the Tonoli Palace and more. The Franciscan monastery houses a rich collection of shells, as well as an old library, an archive and a collection of paintings and works of art. The construction of the monastery began in 1502, in the following centuries the building expanded, a new church, monastery and bell tower were built. The late Baroque Church of St. Mark is located on the elevated northern part of the rectangular town square Kacic Square. It is accessed by wide stairs and a raised courtyard. The building dominates the entire space. Once the only cathedral of the Makarska diocese, today one of the two cathedrals of the Split-Makarska diocese, named after St. Mark the Evangelist, the church is a symbol of the renewed Makarska diocese. The structure predominates throughout the space. The church was built in several stages, from 1700 to consecration in 1766, and is the result of the efforts of two Makarska bishops.
Several builders worked on the church, which was completed by Venetian military captain and engineer Bartol Riviera. In the parish church there are icons from the 16th century, portraits of Makarska bishops and various art objects.
