Makarska is the center of the Makarska Riviera, a popular tourist destination under the mountain Biokovo. It is located about 60 km from Split, in the Split-Dalmatia County, between the municipalities of Brela and Gradac.
It lies in a horseshoe-shaped bay enclosed by the Sveti Petar peninsula and Cape Osejeva. In the center of the city, near the Riva, lies the largest town square - Andrija Kacic Miosic Square with its monument in the middle, which is the work of the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Rendic. Various entertainment and other events take place in the market. The square is named after the most famous folk poet Andrija Kacic Miosic, the author of the most read book in Dalmatia, which has experienced 64 editions so far. The main town square is the center of the city, and it is dominated by a monument made in 1890. The costs of making the monument were covered by contributions from all over Croatia, and on the day the monument was unveiled, many people arrived in Makarska who wanted to attend this important event. An integral part of the monument was a carpet-shaped mosaic showing the coats of arms of all the countries mentioned by Kacic in his Letter. Heraldry disturbed the government in Vienna, which interpreted this as an expression of the desire for the unification of the Croatian states, so it banned it.
Thus, the monument was erected unfinished, which angered the author Ivan Rendic, so he did not even come to the unveiling ceremony. The coat of arms was preserved and placed in the place where it belonged in 1992.
