Primosten is a Dalmatian town and former island that stretches south of Sibenik. On the mainland, visitors can enjoy a modern tourist offer, while on the island, the medieval city center has been preserved. The peninsula is surrounded by picturesque walls.
At the entrance to the old town there is a small square surrounded by original stone houses. A promenade runs around the island, inviting for romantic evening walks. The biggest local attraction is the church of St. George, which proudly rises above the city center. It was built in 1485. The church was first mentioned in written sources in 1681, when the parish priest Pave Bernic entered the name of the parish and his name in the registers. The church is first mentioned in written sources in 1681, when the parish priest Pave Bernic entered the name of the parish and his name in the registers. In the later period, the church was expanded and renovated several times, it was consecrated in 1760. In 1929, a bell tower was built next to the church.
At that time they also ordered bells in Venice, which arrived in 1930 and were blessed. During the time of pastor Andrije Butina, who came from Krapanj, the altar of St. George was erected according to the same model as in the church in Krapanj - it was completed in 1815. There were five altars in the church, four side altars and one large altar. Only two have survived to this day, namely the altar of Our Lady of Loreto, who is also the protector of the city of Primosten, and the altar of Saint John of Trogir. The altar of Our Lady of the Rosary was white with stone pillars or pillars of a dark red color - the stone was created by a stonecutter in Boka Kotor. In 1948, the painting was replaced by a statue of Our Lady of the Rosary. Opposite the altar of the Lady was the altar of the Holy Cross, which was made of black and gray stone. The oldest altar was the great altar of Saint George, which was demolished in 1963. The altar of Our Lady of Loreto is the church's greatest treasure. The original painting on wood was brought by Marko Prgin from the Italian city of Loreto in 1835. Only the heads of Jesus and Mary have been preserved from the original, everything else is now framed or covered with gold and silver.
There are statues of three saints in the church - Saint Joseph, Saint Anthony and Saint Blaise. The church also has church flags - Saint George and the Holy Sacrament, which are called crosses. Every year on May 10, a solemn procession takes place across the bridge to the Church of St. George.
