Primosten is a Dalmatian town located south of Sibenik. It is one of the popular tourist destinations. It is the center of the municipality of Primosten, which belongs to Sibenik-Knin county. The municipality also includes the settlements of Krusevo, Burnij, Vezac, Vadalj and Siroke.
The place is located on a small peninsula between the bays of Primosten and Raduca. It is known for its indigenous stone houses, churches, narrow Mediterranean-style streets, and numerous bays and islands. The history of the place began in the 7th century BC. In written sources, the name Primosten was first mentioned in 1564 and has been preserved until today. Even then, the island with the settlement was protected by a defensive wall. The contact with the mainland was a sliding wooden bridge, later they built a pier bridged with the mainland. Because of this, the settlement was named Primosten after the Croatian verb primostiti. Agriculture and animal husbandry were the main economic activities in Primosten for a long time. The development of tourism began in the middle of the twentieth century and Primosten became one of the leading tourist destinations on the Adriatic coast. Poor, slanted houses without windows and mostly without rooms bear witness to the difficult life of the Primosten farmers, as sometimes only the kitchen and the wine cellar were separated from the rest of the house. At least eight people lived in such houses. It was an old custom that at the beginning of construction, people put a lucky coin in a corner of the house or information about the builder in a bottle.
Today, Primosten is known for the production of olive oil and wine. Primosten's vineyards of the Babic grape variety, which thrives on barren soil in stone, and kilometer-long stone walls are an ode to human work and perseverance. A picture of these vineyards is also exhibited in the United Nations headquarters building in New York. Wine has been cultivated in this region since the 8th century BC, when the Illyrians and Liburnians planted vineyards. The tradition was continued by the Greeks and Romans, and from the 7th century, also by the Croats. Modern Primosten is full of lively shops, small shops and souvenir shops scattered along the narrow cobbled streets. The summer atmosphere is full of fun and sports content. All this will satisfy the guests and bring them unforgettable memories from Primosten. At any time of the year, visitors can enjoy a mild and healthy Mediterranean climate with around 2,600 hours of sunshine per year and pleasant average temperatures of 7 degrees Celsius in winter and 25 degrees Celsius in summer. In the bays of Mala Raduca, Vela, Peles and Primosten, there are well-kept pebbly beaches and crystal clear sea. Not far from the famous tourist spot is Marina Kremik, which has been open to boaters since 1983.
Near Primosten, on the Primosten - Rogoznica turnoff, there is a statue of Our Lady Loretska on Gaj hill. It is an excellent viewpoint over the city and a magnet for tourists because of the seventeen-meter high monument of the "Black" Mary, who is the protector of the city of Primosten.
