Veli Losinj is a small town located in a narrow bay in the southeastern area of the island of Losinj. It lies at the foot of the Saint Ivan hill. The settlement is characterized by tall houses that stand in the first row around the harbor and many luxurious villas with beautiful gardens.
The largest attractions in Veli Losinj with are a free-standing circular tower – the Losinj Museum, the fish market from 1898, the parish church of St. Anton Abbot from 1774, the Church of Our Lady of the Angels from 1510, the Chapel of the Annunciation, the flag tower from 1808, The National Home in a neoclassical building in the center of the city, Vila Matilde – a former family boarding house and much more. In the narrow streets of the picturesque town there are luxurious villas of former ship owners, captains and rich gentlemen. The Chapel of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located on Cape Leva, which was named after the famous Leva seafaring family from Velolosinj. The family originated from Spain and acquired the title of nobility when it participated in the Venetian conflicts with the Turks. The Annunciation Chapel was built in the 18th century. The church was used by sailors for orientation in maritime navigation.
The chapel got its current neoclassical look at the end of the 19th century, in 1897. Its external appearance is characterized by strips of darker and lighter stone. Generations of the famous Stuparic and Budinic families rest in the Annunciation Chapel.
