Lim Bay is one of the most beautiful bays on the Adriatic. It is about ten kilometers long and 600 meters wide. The bay cuts deep into the western part of the Istrian mainland between Vrsar and Rovinj. This is actually a submerged part of the Limska Draga.
In 1980, the Lim Bay was declared a special reserve in the sea, as well as a fishing reserve. The narrow and deep Lim Bay is a typical example of a submerged canyon valley in the karst world. The canyon sides descend more than 100 meters to the sea and are overgrown with maquis. Mussels and oysters are grown on the bottom of the bay, rich in fish. The road runs along the Lim Bay, and the restaurants along it invite you with always fresh seafood and fish. In ancient times, the bay separated the area of Porec from Pula, hence the name - limes means border. In the inner area is Gradina, which is an Illyrian fortress with a necropolis. The remains of a large Illyrian castle are also located on the hill of Sv. Martin. Numerous caves are scattered along the coast, in which traces of human habitation from the Neolithic have been discovered.
The best known is Romualdo's Cave, where, according to legend, Romualdo, the founder of the Benedictine monastery from the 9th century, lived. The ruins of the monastery of St. Michaelmas can be seen high above the coast in the northern part of the Lim Bay.
