Visnjan is a small Istrian settlement in Croatia, the seat of the municipality of the same name, which administratively belongs to the Istria County. This is the most western county of Croatia, covering most of the area of the Istrian peninsula.
The official center is Pazin, which is located in the geographical center of the peninsula. The municipality of Visnjan stretches between the Lim Channel in the south and the Mirna River in the north, only about 15 kilometers from the city of Porec. Visnjan lies on top of a hill and is surrounded by fields, meadows, and forests of white hornbeam and oak. The name Visnjan comes from the Latin word Vicinianus, which means close. It was first mentioned in written sources in the 11th century. Until the 18th century, the settlement was surrounded by walls, which were built during the rule of the Venetian Republic. Most of the locals are engaged in the cultivation of olives, vines, fruit, agriculture and cattle breeding. Due to the rich cultural heritage and unspoiled nature, tourism is also developing more and more. Musical and cultural events are held in the village during the summer. Visnjan has a picturesque old town. The largesst local attractions are the church of St. Anthony, the sundial, the bell tower, the Sincic Palace, the town lodge, the church of St. Cyricus and Julitta, the city gate, the fountain and the church of St. Rocco. The Gothic chapel of St. Anthony was built in the 15th century. The city gate is decorated with a relief of the Venetian lion from 1517. Behind the gate lies the old town square - Pino Budicin square, which is partially surrounded by the city walls, which were built in the 13th and 14th centuries. On the square there is a city loggia from the 18th century, a parish church, a 27-meter-high bell tower and a fountain. The church offers the most beautiful view of the city of Porec and the sea in the distance. Visnjan is best known at home and abroad for its observatory, which is famous for the discovery of many asteroids.
The observatory is located on the nearby Tican hill and is surrounded by a well-kept park and forest. It is known for being very successful in detecting and tracking asteroids. It is the leader in Europe in terms of the number of discovered asteroids.
