Stadion Poljud is the largest sports venue in Split and one of the most recognizable stadiums in Croatia. It is located in the northwestern part of the city and is home to the football club Hajduk Split. It was built in 1979 for the Mediterranean Games and is an architectural masterpiece designed by Croatian architect Boris Magas.
The stadium is known for its distinctive shell-like roof, which provides excellent acoustics and creates a special atmosphere during matches. It has a capacity of around 34,000 spectators and hosts numerous important sports and cultural events, including matches of the Croatian national football team. In addition to football matches, Poljud also hosts concerts, athletic competitions, and other mass events. The stadium has become a symbol of Split’s sports and culture and one of the most iconic venues in the Balkans. Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and one of the most important centers of Dalmatia. It is situated on the Adriatic coast and is known for its rich history, stunning nature, and vibrant city atmosphere. Its history dates back more than 1,700 years, when the Roman emperor Diocletian built his magnificent palace, which today forms the heart of the old town and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is a popular tourist destination, offering a unique combination of ancient landmarks, picturesque streets, beautiful beaches, and a Mediterranean lifestyle. The Riva promenade is the center of social life, where locals and tourists gather in numerous cafes and restaurants overlooking the sea. Split is also an important transport hub, with ferries departing daily from its port to the Dalmatian islands, and it has good connections with the country's interior through the highway and railway network. The city has a strong connection to sports, particularly football, as Hajduk Split is one of the oldest and most beloved clubs in Croatia. Its supporters, known as Torcida, are considered some of the most loyal and passionate fans in the world. Stadion Poljud is the main venue for football matches, creating an unforgettable atmosphere, especially during the famous derby between Hajduk and Dinamo Zagreb.
However, Split is not just about football, as it has a rich sports tradition in athletics, rowing, basketball, and water polo. With its unique blend of history, culture, natural beauty, and sporting passion, Split is one of the most attractive cities in Croatia, offering visitors a true Mediterranean experience.
