The statue of Bernard Vukas at Poljud Stadium in Split is dedicated to one of the greatest Croatian football players of all time. It was erected in honor of the legendary forward who shone in the Hajduk jersey in the period after World War II.
Vukas, known for his exceptional speed, technique, and vision, was three times named the best footballer in Yugoslavia, and his popularity extended beyond the borders of the former country. In addition to his success with Hajduk, he also excelled internationally, playing for the Yugoslav national team and competing in major football tournaments. His legacy lives on in the hearts of fans, making the statue an important symbol for both Hajduk and the entire city of Split. Poljud Stadium, where the statue stands, is one of the most recognizable sports venues in the region. It was built in 1979 for the Mediterranean Games and, with its unique shell-shaped roof, is an architectural landmark. Designed to blend with the natural surroundings of the nearby bay and hills, it resembles a seashell, giving it a distinctive visual identity. The stadium has a capacity of over 30,000 spectators and is home to Hajduk Split, which has one of the most passionate supporter groups in Europe – Torcida, founded in 1950 as the oldest organized fan group on the continent. In addition to football matches, Poljud hosts numerous sporting and cultural events, including the famous Ultra Europe electronic music festival, which attracts crowds from all over the world each year. Split, the second-largest city in Croatia, is known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and picturesque coastline. Its most famous landmark is Diocletian’s Palace, an ancient complex from the 4th century that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved Roman structures in the world. A walk through the narrow stone streets of the old town reveals a blend of historical influences, ranging from antiquity to the present day. Alongside its historical sights, Split offers a vibrant seaside atmosphere, the popular Riva promenade, top-quality gastronomy, and numerous beaches that attract visitors all year round.
The city breathes football and sports, and Hajduk is not just a club but an essential part of Split’s identity and its people. That is why the statue of Bernard Vukas at Poljud is not only a tribute to a single player but also an expression of the deep connection between the city and its football tradition, pride, and sense of belonging passed down through generations.
