Umag is a popular coastal tourist town in the northwestern part of Istria. It belongs to the Istria County and the Municipality of Umag, which also includes numerous surrounding settlements and tourist areas. It is located along the main road between Savudrija and Novigrad, approximately 10 kilometers from the Slovenian border.
The town is known for its well-maintained beaches, rich tourist offer, sporting events, and pleasant Mediterranean atmosphere. Umag consists of an older and a newer part. The old town center is situated on a peninsula, while the newer part extends onto the mainland and includes the areas of Punta, Komunela, and Moela. The most important economic activity is tourism, while viticulture, agriculture, and fishing also play an important role. The development of tourism in the town began at the turn of the 20th century. Among the most significant cultural and historical landmarks are the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saint Peregrine, the Church of St. Roch from the 16th century, and the remains of the town walls from the 10th century with a defensive tower from the 14th century. The best beaches in Umag include the main beach in the Punta settlement, Moela city beach, Osmica beach in the Stella Maris Resort, Kanegra beach in the Kanegra tourist settlement, Savudrija beach next to Camping Savudrija, Polynesia and Aurora beaches in the Katoro Resort, Laguna beach near the ATP Stadium, the central Park Umag beach, and Villa Rosetta beach in Zambratija. Moela city beach is a small beach in the northern part of Umag, located just a few minutes’ walk from the old town center. The beach is partly concrete and partly rocky, with piers that allow easier access to the sea. Moela is known for its cleanliness, pleasant atmosphere, and clear sea, making it popular among both locals and visitors seeking relaxation by the sea. There is little natural shade on the beach, so visitors often use sun umbrellas during the summer months. The sea is usually calm, making it suitable for families with children. The beach offers opportunities for recreation and relaxation.
A well-maintained promenade runs alongside it, and nearby there are bars, cafés, and restaurants. During the summer months, the beach is lively, yet it still retains a pleasant local character. Moela city beach offers a beautiful view of the Umag coastline and sunsets, and also serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the town of Umag.
