Baska Voda is a charming tourist resort nestled on the northwestern part of the Makarska coast, beneath the majestic Biokovo mountain range. It lies just ten kilometers from the renowned town of Makarska, famous for its stunning Adriatic beaches.
Historically, the inhabitants of Baska Voda were primarily engaged in fishing and agriculture, but tourism has since become the dominant industry. The town’s tourism sector blossomed after World War II, and today, Baska Voda is celebrated for its pristine sea, long sandy beaches, forested surroundings, and high-quality hotels and restaurants. The area has been inhabited since Roman times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological discoveries, while the current settlement dates back to the early 18th century.
Cultural and historical landmarks include the Parish Church of St. Nicholas, the Church of St. Lawrence (built in 1750), the statue of St. Nicholas the Traveler, the Fountain of Baska Voda, the Grand Hotel Slavia, and the Anchor monument. The Parish Church, built at the start of the 20th century, stands on the site of an older church, and nearby lie some medieval tombstones. On the Gradina hill, east of the town, archaeologists have uncovered traces of an ancient settlement and a late antique Byzantine fortress.
The bronze statue of St. Nicholas the Traveler, crafted by renowned Croatian sculptor Mladen Mikulin in 1998, serves as a symbolic guardian of the town. St. Nicholas, considered the patron saint of Baska Voda, as well as travelers and sailors, raises his hand in blessing to all who arrive in Baska Voda, including its many visitors. Each year on December 6, the feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated with a procession and holy mass. During the procession, sea captains and sailors carry the saint’s statue through the town and along the promenade, blessing sailors and their ships at the main pier.
Baska Voda is also known for its long stretches of white pebble beaches, such as Nikolina Beach, Ikovac Beach, Podluka Beach, Stazica Beach, Basko Polje Beach, Djecje Selo Beach, Zbanjica Beach, Promajna Beach, Bratus Beach, and Krvavica Beach.
The town offers a wide range of recreational and sports activities and serves as an ideal starting point for both short and long excursions. One of the most popular adventures is exploring the Biokovo Mountain, which offers marked hiking trails, a unique variety of flora and fauna, and breathtaking panoramic views.
