The Imotski region and the town of Imotski are part of the Dalmatian Zagora, which stretches along the 150-kilometer Dalmatian belt near larger towns such as Drnisa, Knina, Vrlike, Vrgorac, Sinj and Imotski. Imotski lies on the other side of the mountain range, Biokovo, in the very hinterland of the Makarska Riviera, which is a popular tourist center.
It is about 30 kilometers to Baska voda, when the St. Ili tunnel was built through Biokovo. Imotski is only a few kilometers away from the Croatian-Bosnian border, and the Bosnian Mostar and the religious pilgrimage center of Medzugorje are not far away. In the area of the Imotska region, the fertile Imotska polje once played a key role, enabling the local residents to live. Tourism has been developing more and more in recent years. The biggest local attractions are the Red and Blue Lakes, which represent a true natural phenomenon. Red Lake is the deepest lake in Croatia. The two beautiful lake spots lie almost next to each other, right next to the town of Imotski. The two karst lakes were once underground lakes. The collapse of the ceiling in the karst cave, which then filled with water, created two lakes. The Red Lake is named after the red rocks, very steep and high walls that surround it and emphasize its dramatic image. The beautiful natural phenomenon can be admired from the top of a small lookout located right next to the local road that leads past the lake. Red Lake ranks among the deepest lakes in Europe. Croatian cavers organized a speleological-diving research expedition in 1998, during which they discovered that the depth of the lake is at least 287 meters, and the height difference is 528 meters. In 2013, the submarine that was lowered into the lake measured 255 meters deep, but many believe that the final depth of the lake is even around 350 meters. The first person to dive and touch the bottom of the lake on May 6, 2017 was the French speleologist Frederic Swierczynski. The Red Lake fascinates all visitors with its unusual red color and mystical appearance. The color changes from light red to dark red depending on the time and weather. This color is due to the high content of oxides in the water and the surrounding rocky terrain.
This makes the lake look like a mysterious red eye reflected in the peaceful landscape. Similar to the Blue Lake, the Red Lake is also a popular tourist spot, especially during the summer season, when visitors enjoy the natural wonders of Imotski. This lake is an opportunity to relax in a peaceful environment in nature and to explore one of the most unusual natural phenomena in Croatia.
