Makarska is a popular tourist town located at the foot of the Biokovo mountain in the Split-Dalmatia County. It is located halfway between Split and Dubrovnik. The climate in this area is Mediterranean with strong storms in the winter.
The town, with around 13,000 inhabitants, is located in a small bay closed by the St. Peter peninsula and Cape Osejava. Makarska has one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic, which is about 2 kilometers long and surrounded by a pine forest and a pleasant park. The largest historical and cultural attractions of the city are the Cathedral of St. Mark, the Franciscan monastery, the Malacological Museum with 3,000 shells and the Lourdes Vepric sanctuary. The monastery has a collection of paintings and works of art, an old library and an archive. In the old part of Makarska are the baroque church of St. Filip, a monument to Napoleon's Marshal Marmont, the remains of St. Peter's Church and some baroque buildings. Makarska is connected to the island of Brac by a ferry line. Saint Peter is a small peninsula located at the harbor entrance to Makarska. It got its name from the church of Saint Peter, which was built in the 13th century. Today, the peninsula is a city park that has a romantic promenade and a popular swimming area. The peninsula is also marked by traces of prehistoric times. It offers many peaceful corners, such as the lighthouse from 1884, the church of St. Peter on the elevated area of the peninsula, the statue of St. Peter, and cliffs from which you can jump into the sea.
Near the statue of St. Peter is a chain link fence on which lovers hang a love lock and then throw the key into the sea. Not far from the lighthouse is a rocky beach used mostly by nudists.
