Makarska is a town on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, located about 60 kilometers from Split, in the Split-Dalmatia County. It is a famous tourist center, which stretches in a bay in the shape of a horseshoe between Mount Biokovo and the Adriatic Sea.
The city has a varied historical past. Among the cultural and historical sights are the famous palaces, Tonoli's house and the house of the Ivanisevic family. Tonoli House is located on the way to the big city beach. It was built at the end of the 19th century by the Venetian physician Tonoli. He built the house for himself and his family as a luxurious building just outside the city center. Today it houses the premises of the Makarska City Museum and the Makarska Tourist Board. After graduating from the Medical School in Padua in 1804, Luigi Tonogoli worked as a physician and surgeon in Makarska from 1807. He was important during the battle against the plague in 1815, about which he wrote in his manuscript “Observationes in Pestern Macarensem anni MDCCCXV”. The manuscript is now housed in a library in Forli, Italy. On the west side of the Makarska coast, the doctor built a two-storey building in the late Baroque style, which still houses the City Museum. On the small square Listun, located next to Kacic Square, stands a baroque palace - the house of the Ivanisevic family. It reflected the taste and wealth of the Makarska aristocracy, and now represents the most beautiful monument of palace architecture in the city. The Ivanisevic-Uzmenovic family is mentioned among the most famous Makarska families after the departure of the Turks at the end of the 17th and through the 18th and 19th centuries. Together with other families, they were part of the social class that contributed the most to the spiritual and material development of Makarska and its surroundings.
In the early 18th century, the family built a two-story palace with a veranda with wooden pillars behind the fence, and its entrance wing had an economic function. The palace was damaged in Second World War and is still awaiting complete restoration.
