Makarska is a popular tourist town and port, located at the foot of Mount Biokovo on the main road Split-Dubrovnik. It has been a cultural, economic, administrative, political and educational center since ancient times, and a well-known tourist center since the mid-20th century.
The town stretches along the bay, which is protected from the effects of the sea by the peninsula of St. Peter and Cape Osejava. The peninsula is a wooded park that is attractive to many visitors, recreationists and nature lovers. It offers a beautiful view of the city, the open sea, islands and Mount Biokovo. The biggest cultural, historical and natural sights on the peninsula are the lighthouse of St. Peter, the church of St. Peter, the monument to St. Peter, the beach of St. Peter and beautifully landscaped walking trails. Traces of a prehistoric hillfort and parts of late antique and Venetian architecture can also be seen on the peninsula. The Church of St. Peter was reconstructed after the appearance of a church from the 15th century, which was built on the foundations of a church from the 6th century. The old church was badly damaged in the 1962 earthquake, so a new one was built in its place. Its remains were next year on Good Friday during the evening ceremony in the parish church by order of the then municipal authorities completely mined and thrown into the sea. The church was renovated and extended several times, probably in the 15th century it got a Gothic form, and in the 18th century Baroque. It was restored in 1992 according to the condition of the 18th century church.
