Biokovo Nature Park is located on the coast of southern Dalmatia. Biokovo is a mountain ridge that offers an unforgettable panoramic view of the Makarska Riviera, the sea, the nearby islands and the surroundings of Biokovo. The highest peak is St. Jura, which is reached by an asphalted road.
In addition to its location, Biokovo is unique due to its geomorphology and biological diversity, which were the main reasons why Biokovo was declared a nature park in 1981. The park covers an area of around 20,000 ha, its highest point is Saint Jura (1762 m). It is one of the most popular areas in Croatia for hiking enthusiasts, with many trails winding through the hills past vineyards, olive groves and pine forests. The Biokova massif stretches about nine kilometers inland and 36 kilometers along the coast. It is characterized by a series of limestone cliffs and rocks interspersed with sinkholes, chasms and caves. The most famous mountain and hiking destination is Vosac (1421 meters), located about three kilometers from Makarska. Because of its isolation, the Biokovo Nature Park hosts endemic plant species, among which the famous Biokovo bellflower. The Kotisina Botanical Garden is also in this area, located about two kilometers from Makarska. It is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Croatia. Biokovo is known for its viewpoints that offer wonderful views. Among them, the most famous viewpoint is the Skywalk Biokovo, located at 1228 meters above sea level. It is a horseshoe-shaped viewpoint that stands outside the cliff and has a glass surface for walking. It is located in the southwestern part of the park on the 13th kilometer of the Biokovo road, right next to the information center. Next to it stands a geological column - a three-dimensional display of the rock sections that formed the Biokovo area from its beginning to the present with a geological time table and a description of the age and types of rocks. The observation deck can accommodate up to 30 visitors at a time. Visitors can access the viewpoint via the Biokovo road, which leads from the main entrance to the Biokovo Nature Park along the main Makarska - Vrgorac road towards the highest peak of St. Jura. At the top, there is a television tower and a facility for telecommunications equipment, as well as the church of St. Jura, which was built in 1968 on the site of the previous church. It was probably built immediately after the Christianization. It certainly existed in the 12th century, as evidenced by a stone slab located above the altar of the old ruined church. The church was mentioned in 1640, it was rebuilt several times in the past, until it was finally demolished in 1965 due to the tower and telecommunications building.
From the top of St. Jura, a panoramic view of Zagora and the islands is offered, and in exceptionally good weather, the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighboring Italy can be seen. Among the viewpoints are Staza, Strbina and Vosac.
