Omis is a picturesque Dalmatian town located at the mouth of the Cetina River, where it flows into the Adriatic Sea. With its rich history dating back to ancient times and a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage, it attracts numerous visitors.
The town is famous for its medieval pirates who once controlled the maritime routes of the Adriatic, and today, many historical buildings and fortresses bear witness to this past. In the heart of the old town stands the parish church of St. Michael, built in the early 17th century. Its architecture combines Gothic, Renaissance, and early Baroque elements, with a lavish portal crafted by the famous Bokanic family from the island of Brac. The church façade features a round rosette, a statue of St. Michael, and the coat of arms of Omis, while the coats of arms of former Venetian provinces can be seen by the side entrance. The interior preserves valuable sacred artworks, reflecting the town’s rich religious and artistic tradition. The bell tower, which complements the church complex, was built in the early 18th century according to the designs of Venetian engineer Giovanni Battista Camozzini. In addition to the church of St. Michael, Omis offers many other attractions. Overlooking the town are two imposing fortresses, Mirabela and Fortica. Mirabela, dating back to the 13th century, was once a strategic lookout for Omis pirates, and today it offers a stunning view of the town and the sea.
Even higher, on a hill above Omis, lies the Fortica fortress, from where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Brac, Hvar, and the entire Omis Riviera. Exploring the old town, visitors can wander through narrow stone streets filled with interesting architectural details, historic houses, and charming squares. An important landmark is the monastery of St. Peter in Priko, dating back to the 10th century, one of the oldest sacral buildings in Dalmatia. Along the coast, the church of the Holy Spirit stands out with its simple yet distinctive Renaissance architecture. Omis is not only known for its history but also for its breathtaking natural beauty. The Cetina River canyon offers numerous opportunities for adventure tourism, including rafting, canyoning, and rock climbing. At the river’s mouth lies Punta Beach, one of the most popular sandy beaches in Dalmatia, featuring shallow, clear waters ideal for families with children. Just a short walk from the old town, Cetina Beach is another stunning spot, a pebble beach located at the river’s mouth. The combination of fresh and saltwater makes it a unique and refreshing place for swimming. One of Omis' most beloved cultural events is the traditional Festival of Dalmatian Klapa, held every summer, bringing together top performers of Dalmatian a cappella singing and attracting numerous music lovers.
Omis offers a unique blend of history, culture, and nature, making it a perfect destination for those looking to experience authentic Dalmatian charm, explore the rich heritage of this coastal town, and enjoy the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea.
