The town of Novalja is located in the northwestern area of the island of Pag. It lies in a beautiful bay that faces the open sea and therefore offers unforgettable sunsets. Novalja is a tourist, economic and cultural settlement and the central port of the island of Pag.
Novalja was created as a port of the nearby town of Kisse, which sank in the 4th century, destroyed in a strong earthquake. This is also where the name Novalja comes from - the Latin Novalis means port. Novalja is characterized by a colorful historical past. Novalja got the status of a city in 1997, which was the result of the centuries-old wish of the locals. The city of Novalja includes the following settlements: Novalja, Metajna, Stara Novalja, Potocnica, Lun, Zubovici, Vidalici and Kustici. Tourism began to develop in Novalja in the middle of the 20th century and fundamentally changed the customs and appearance of Novalja. The locals immediately perceived the possibility of economic progress in tourism, because, unlike the city of Pag, they did not have major economic entities, such as, for example, salt mines. In a short time, a number of bars, restaurants, and many entertainment centers opened in the place, and the hitherto unknown port of Zrce with its beautiful sandy beach began to gain more and more importance. The small maritime settlement began to expand urbanally, the Gajac apartment complex was established in the south, Gaj in the northwest, the craft zone in the north, and the entire main part of Novalja was remodeled.
The development of tourism in Novalja significantly accelerated the development of the economy. Today, Novalja is known as one of the most beautiful tourist spots on the Adriatic, with a wide variety of offers that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.
