Jablanac is a small seaside village and harbor located at the bottom of the bay in the Velebit Channel. It belongs to the city of Senj, which is known as the oldest settlement in the northern Adriatic, in the Licka-Senj County.
In written sources, the settlement was first mentioned in 1179 as the parish center of Ablan. It became a free city in the 13th century. Jablaniska parish spread all the way from Zrnovice to Karlobag. At the end of the 13th century, the Frankopan princes ruled in Jablanca. Jablanac was attacked and burned by the Turks in the 14th century. Residents from Dalmatia settled in the settlement around 1639. On the cape in front of the harbor are the ruins of the medieval city, which was built in 1251 by ban Stjepan Subic. There are two lighthouses in front of the entrance to the bay, one in front of the hotel, while the other is on the pier where the ferries used to land. Until July 3, 2012, Jablanac served as a ferry connection with the island of Rab. Today, ferries run from the tourist village of Stinica, which is located about a kilometer north of Jablanac. The Adriatic highway Reka - Split runs above the settlement. On the rock above the former ferry port stands the Jablanac Mountain House (20 masl), which, due to its low altitude, was for a long time the world record holder among buildings of this type.
South of Jablanac is Zavratnica, which is known as one of the most beautiful bays in the northern Adriatic. A picturesque stone path carved into the steep coast leads to it. Zavratnica Bay is between 50 and 150 m wide, 900 m long, and the cliffs are about 100 meters high.
