Pakostane

Pakostane is a popular tourist settlement and the center of the municipality of the same name in northern Dalmatia, Croatia, administratively part of Zadar County. It is located in a unique position between the Adriatic Sea and Lake Vrana, the largest natural lake in Croatia, approximately halfway between Zadar and Biograd na Moru.

Due to its exceptional location, rich history, and beautiful nature, it is among the most popular tourist destinations on this part of the Adriatic coast. The area was already settled in Roman times, as evidenced by the remains of ancient villas, a Roman port, and other archaeological finds. Over the centuries, the area was influenced by the Venetians, the Templars, and Ottoman invasions. In addition to Pakostane, the municipality also includes the settlements of Drage, Vrana, and the island of Vrgada, all of which play an important role in the history and development of this area. In Vrana, there is the old town of Vrana with the remains of a Templar fortress and monastery, a Benedictine monastery, the seat of the Vrana prior, and Maskovica Han, one of the best-preserved monuments of Ottoman architecture in Croatia. Among the most important landmarks are the three-nave stone parish church of the Assumption of the Lord on King Tomislav Square, built according to the plans of architect Cirilo Ivekovic, and the Church of Saint Justin on the small island of the same name in front of the town, which dates back to the 17th century. Visitors can also see a statue of Franjo Tudjman, the first President of the Republic of Croatia. Pakostane is located near four famous national parks – Northern Velebit, Krka, Kornati, and Plitvice Lakes – making it an excellent starting point for exploring the natural beauties of Dalmatia. In front of the town lie several picturesque small islands, including Sveti Justin, Babuljas, Zavinac Veliki, Zavinac Mali, and Veliki Skolj, which further enrich the coastal landscape. Due to its position, the town is well protected from southern and southwestern winds, creating pleasant conditions for swimming, sailing, and other sea activities. One of the most popular beaches is Punta Beach, located in the immediate vicinity of the town center. Thanks to its well-maintained infrastructure, clean sea, and rich offer, it is especially popular among families with children and lovers of relaxed summer holidays. An important part of the tourist identity of the town is also the tourist resort Pine Beach Pakostane. Its beginnings date back to the 1960s, when under the name Club Med Pakostane it became one of the first major tourism projects in the area. Through its development, it significantly contributed to the growth of tourism in the town and has, over decades, marked the lives of many locals and their families. Today, it remains one of the most recognizable tourist complexes in Pakostane.
