Savudrija is located in the northwestern part of the Istrian coast on the cape of the same name, which also represents the most western point of the Balkan Peninsula. Administratively, it belongs to the city of Umag, which in turn falls under the Istrian County.
The biggest local landmark is the Savudrija lighthouse. It is easily accessible, it can be reached by car, boat, bicycle or on foot. The nominal range of the Savudrija lighthouse is 30 miles. The lighthouse in Savudrija is the oldest still functioning lighthouse on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. The plan for the lighthouse was made by the architect Pietro Nobile under the patronage of the Austrian emperor Franco I and on the basis of the order of the "Deputazione di Bursa" of Trieste, as can be seen from the inscription at the base of the building. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1816, it was completed in 1817, and it began operating in 1818. Even the Austrian emperor, who was passing by at the time, was present at the first lighting of the lighthouse. Stone from the nearby coast was used in the construction, and the roof of the building is covered with tiles weighing up to 70 kilograms. This is the only way he can defy the strongest storms. There is a plaque built into the lighthouse that bears the inscription Cursibus navigatum nocturnis dirigentis. It is the first lighthouse in the world that used gas produced by the distillation of coal for lighting. It was excavated in a hard coal mine from the Labina area. In case of failure of the gas installation, another solution was also possible and oil was used for lighting. The setting up of the lighthouse was very important for the people of Trieste, as it ensured safe navigation towards the port of Trieste.
The lighthouse is visible from the Municipality of Trieste and once represented an important part of communication. Ships signaled with flags that they would enter the harbor, which provided enough time to make the necessary preparations for their landing.
