Vodnjan is a small town, which is about six kilometers from the sea and ten kilometers from the famous city of Pula, on the main road Pula - Rovinj. The old economic basis of the place, along with modern tourism, is agriculture, especially olive growing and winemaking.
Vodnjan experienced a similar historical development as all neighboring Istrian places. The central part of the western part of the city has preserved its characteristic medieval design: rows of buildings in the form of a wreath around the central square, irregular and narrow streets. Along the main street, which connects the entire eastern part of Vodnjan, the younger part of the settlement is expanding. The castle with a defensive moat was built around 1300 and demolished in 1808. The buildings that were built in the Venetian Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles have been preserved. On the site of an older, pre-Romanesque predecessor, the church of St. Blaz is located, which was built between 1761 and 1808. The bell tower is separate, which is a common phenomenon in Istria. Inside they keep valuable works of art: scenes from the life of St. Leona, church vestments from the 14th century, stone custodianship from the 15th century, gilded pantry from the 15th century, oil painting on canvas (The Last Supper), tempera on wood (Mother of God). This testifies to the fact that Italian masters from Venice worked in the town and that the place was influenced by Byzantine art.
Of the palaces from the period from the 15th century to the 18th century, the Bradamante Palace stands out the most with the decorations on the facade. In the Betika Palace, there are museum rooms where many valuable paintings from the 16th to the 18th century are stored. The surroundings of Vodnjan are full of sites from the Antiquity to the Gothic period.
