Vrsar is a famous tourist town located on the west coast of Istria, between the towns of Rovinj and Porec. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in tourism, agriculture, viticulture and fishing. The city has many cultural and historical attractions.
Old quarries are among the special features of Vrsar. Stone has been quarried in them ever since the reign of the Romans. On the islands in front of the city and near the Romanesque church of St. Maria, traces of abandoned quarries are still visible. One of them is also at the top of the islet of St. Juraj. The quarries were most exploited during the period of the second Venetian rule from the 13th to the 18th century. During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, high-quality stone from Vrsar was very well known in many cities in Italy. In Venice, it was widely used for the construction of churches, palaces and bridges. Many well-known Italian builders and sculptors came to Vrsar to buy stone. Montraker is an abandoned quarry located north of the city. Today, it is the seat of the summer sculpture school.
Since 1991, a well-known sculpture school has been held in the quarry every year. Picturesque sculptures from sculpting workshops can be seen in city parks, on beaches, in motorhomes and on the Vrsar waterfront.
