Biograd na Moru - St. John Evangelist Basilica

Biograd na Moru is a coastal town in northern Dalmatia, located along the Pasman Channel, approximately 30 kilometres south of Zadar. It is a popular tourist destination, known for its cultural heritage, maritime tradition, picturesque coastline and numerous landmarks that bear witness to its rich and diverse history.

Among the most recognisable landmarks is the Parish Church of St. Anastasia, built in the mid-18th century, which represents one of the town’s central religious monuments with its distinctive architecture. The remains of the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist also hold significant historical value, reflecting the medieval importance of Biograd. The Benedictine monastery with the basilica was built in the 11th century by the Croatian King Petar Kresimir IV. The monastery played an important religious role, but its history was relatively short. During the Venetian conquest of Biograd in the 12th century, it was almost completely destroyed. Before the destruction, the Benedictine monks withdrew and, under the leadership of the abbot, first settled in Sibenik. A few years later, they moved to the island of Pasman, where they took over the Church of St. Cosmas and Damian on the hill of Cokovac. Today, the remains of the basilica represent a valuable archaeological monument, reminding visitors of Biograd’s rich medieval heritage. Among the important cultural institutions is the Museum of Local History, which preserves, researches and presents the heritage of Biograd and its surroundings. Particularly notable is the collection of artefacts from the sunken Venetian merchant ship from the 16th century near the islet of Gnalic, which offers visitors an insight into the history of maritime trade, life on the Adriatic and the important role of the town in historical maritime connections. In addition to the church and museum, the town is adorned with numerous monuments preserving the memory of important events and figures. The Homeland War Monument, located on King Tomislav Square, is dedicated to Croatian defenders and victims of the war in the 1990s and represents a symbol of remembrance, respect and gratitude. The Peace Monument, dedicated to the victims of Hiroshima and all victims of wars around the world, uses the image of a crane as a symbol of peace, hope and the desire for a world without violence. Along the town’s waterfront stands the Obalac Monument, a work by Croatian sculptor Ante Brcic, whose contemporary design represents a connection between the town, the sea and the traditional way of life on the Adriatic coast. One of the important landmarks is also the Monument to King Tomislav, the first Croatian king, which stands at the beginning of the town’s waterfront. Its obelisk-shaped design was created following the model of an older monument from 1925 and reminds visitors of an important period in Croatian history. A monument dedicated to Pope St. John Paul II. also stands on the town promenade. He was closely connected with Croatia and its people. During his pontificate, he visited the country three times, and the local population remembers him especially for his efforts to promote peace, reconciliation and support during difficult periods of Croatian history. Among the town’s monuments are also the Monument to Dr Franjo Tudman, the first president of independent Croatia, and the monument to the Armenian Vahan Melik Karaganan, who is often referred to as the father of Biograd tourism due to his important role in the development of the town’s tourist offer.

The landmarks of Biograd na Moru are therefore important not only for their artistic and architectural value but also because they tell stories about the town’s past, maritime development, cultural heritage and the people who have shaped its history.
