Bribir is a small settlement in Croatia that administratively belongs to the Municipality of Vinodol, which is part of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It is located near Crikvenica and Novi Vinodolski, in the inland Vinodol Valley, approximately five kilometers from the Adriatic Sea.
It is the largest settlement in the municipality and serves as its administrative, economic, and cultural center. The town is known for its rich cultural heritage and important sacral and historical remains. Among its landmarks are the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul, the Frankopan Tower, the chapel of Saint Anthony the Hermit, the chapel of Saint Joseph, a bust of the writer Mihovil Kombol, and a sundial. In the Middle Ages, Bribir was an important center of the Vinodol region. The development of the settlement was closely connected to a fortress or castle built in 1302 by the Frankopans. The castle was later demolished in the 19th century, and today only a square tower with a part of the former defensive wall has been preserved. Bribir is first mentioned in historical sources as a Frankopan stronghold with certain forms of self-governance in 1288 in the Vinodol Code. This important legal document regulated customs, rules, and relations between the nobility and the local population, which had already been formed in this area earlier. Among the sacral buildings, the church of Saints Peter and Paul stands out. It was built in 1524 and is associated with the local patron saints of the town. Every year on June 29, locals celebrate their feast day with a mass and accompanying events. In the nearby settlement of Ugrini, the well-known botanist Josip Pancic was born. Today, Bribir functions as a small local center that provides basic services to the population of the entire Vinodol municipality. The town has healthcare, educational, and cultural institutions, shops, hospitality venues offering authentic local cuisine, and various service activities.
It offers accommodation in apartments designed in the spirit of traditional stone architecture typical of the Vinodol region. For activity enthusiasts, the Vinodol Valley offers numerous hiking and cycling trails leading to beautiful viewpoints overlooking the Kvarner Bay.
